internet slooooooooooooooooooooow

Hey, new to these forums. Ever since i've got Highspeed internet. It has been running Freakishly slow. Its a DSL connection,(supposed to be) running at 5mbps, But it only Downloads at like 160kbps like at tops. There are no viruses on my computer. Thats what McAfee says. And when i play My video games (Half-Life, Digital Paintball,Counter-strike.) my latency ranges from 50 - 100 on most servers.I talked to some of the people who have very low latencys about 10 - 30 most servers. They say that they have a 1.5 mbps connection.And i was wondering what was really wrong with my network connection.The modem my ISP sent me is blocky and stuff, Like the one,one of my buddies has but he bought a 1.5 mbps connection by the same isp and same modem as me. His downloads at i think was 1.2 mbps thats what i saw. But mines does'nt reach over 170 kbps. So do you guys have anything to help me?

You need to take this up with your DSL provider. There may be a problem with your DSL installation.

Ask your ISP if they offer DSL2 yet, it runs at 24mbps download / 2 mbps upload, it is now available in several countries, it runs on the old copper pair phone lines, but telephone exchanges need to be up graded and you need a special DSL2 modem.
At 24 mbps it is often faster than coaxial cable which is often 18-20 mbps max for public, but slower than private fibre optic cable that companys often use which runs at 155 - 165 mbps.
As countries roll out fibre to the node, or full fibre networks public internet speeds will increase to 155 mbps, but most countrys are very slow with the fibre roll out.
Maybe download RxTx32 http://www.netfor2.com/RxTxPreview.html or similar and check your actual speeds, the ISP server loads including how many people are connected sometimes when more than a 1-2 million people are on the ISP server it automatically slows everybody, etc.
